Dandy Lions

Dandy Lions is a delightful morning of gardening, craft, singing and play for young children and their carers.

Each week we explore a new garden-related theme, with specially designed activities for children under the age of five. See at the end of this page for our Spring themes.

Join Royal Botanic Garden Sydney education staff for:

  • Garden activities including planting and harvesting

  • Nature-based art and craft

  • Lively, interactive storytelling

  • Songs, music and dance

  • Garden discovery walks

Tinkerbell & The Dream Fairies

In Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies, the adventurous Tinkerbell happens upon the fairies from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Together, the cheeky Mustardseed, fluttery Moth, daring Cobweb and sweet Peaseblossom all go on a magical quest with Tinkerbell, learning about each other and the different worlds they come from.

Audience members are invited to come dressed up for fun either as a Fairy or an Elf but Jedi’s, Pirates and all super heroes are all welcome! Come along and join in the singing and dancing, before going on a special adventure to ‘Bubble Land’ where they help Tinkerbell and her Fairy Friends find their lost wings. Visit here for more info and bookings.

This all-day school holiday program is full of fun and adventures in the Garden. Kids spend the day exploring the garden and connecting with nature!

Monday 15th April 2019- AUTUMN GARDEN
There is something magical about Autumn! Let’s get creative with colour. Make a gorgeous Autumn fold leaf banner, a dream catcher using loose plant parts and an Autumn-inspired masterpiece! Meet a plant expert, throw leaves in the air and plant in our Cryptogam house. Games, outdoor play and so much more!

Tuesday 16th April 2019- SENSORY GARDEN
Explore the garden using your five senses. Plant edible flowers in our Cryptogam house, play sensory bingo, try Lemon Myrtle punch and make sensory candles with essential oils. Visit interesting locations and meet an expert. Games, outdoor play and so much more!

Thursday 18th April 2019- EASTER GARDEN
Easter is almost here, so get ready for some chocolatey fun! Take part in our Easter hat parade, make hot cross buns, design and print your own Easter calico bag, and go on an egg hunt. Visit interesting locations, garden in the Yellowwood, play games and so much more!

Herbarium on Stage - Botanist for a Day

Become a botanist for the day in this super fun, free, hands-on workshop! Starting at The Calyx in the heart of the Royal Botanic Garden you’ll get to:

  • Explore the Herb Garden on a sensory tour, where kids will smell, touch and taste plants that have been important to people for thousands of years.

  • Get your hands dirty in a potting session, where kids will plant their own seedling to take home.

  • Learn to create your very own plant specimen just like botanists do! You’ll be given a beautiful dried flower or fascinating leaf to start your very own collection of pressed plants.

Before or after the workshop you can stay a little longer and check outPlants with Bite!,the new carnivorous plant display at The Calyx that tells the story of the captivating and bizarre world of carnivorous plants.

A partnership between the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and Klorane Botanical Foundation, this workshop aims to foster plant knowledge and passion in the next generation

Clay Echidnas

Come in and join one of our Indigenous Educators in a fun, educational, hands-on clay making experience.

Learn about the Echidna through clay making and fun games and activities. Using clay and bush materials you will be creating your very own Echidna, a Native Australian Animal which you will be able to take home at the end of your experience.

When: 16th, 17th, 24th and 26th April 2019

Sketchbook Scavenger Hunt

Get ready to get arty!

Run by visiting artists from the National Art School, this workshop will teach kids how to develop their own artist sketchbook. Learn how to sketch from the world around you, build process drawings, develop your ideas and learn the confidence to keep drawing at home.

Walking throughout the Garden, learn how to observe and visually record viewpoints of landscapes, close ups of plants, people and animals interacting in the environment and build your skills in line, shape, proportion, tone, and composition.

Part of the 2019 Garden Art Month – a collaboration between the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and the National Art School.

The Great Garden Egg Hunt

The Easter Bunny is coming to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney on Saturday and Sunday of the Easter long weekend! Children use a trail map to complete fun challenges, collect yummy Cadbury chocolate eggs and hunt for their furry Easter friend.

Following the trail, children will move around the beautiful gardens between five activities which are egg or bunny related. There will also be a family photo opportunity at the end with the Easter Bunny so bring your camera!
Come and join in the festivities and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun!

Please note, The Royal Botanic Garden cannot hide chocolate eggs in the Garden for hygiene and safety reasons. Instead children will be handed chocolate eggs on completion of each activity . Children will receive chocolate treats along the trail. By purchasing this ticket, you endorse your child's participation in an egg hunt & collection of chocolate products.

Feeding Time at Plants with Bite!

Delve into the fascinating world of carnivorous plants and have your chance to get up close with these creepy and weird specimens. Join us for this fun and educational experience where you will learn about the evolution of carnivorous plants, the different trap types and how they go about catching their prey.

Set within The Calyx which is showing the Plants With Bite display that houses a colossal collection of carnivorous plants, you have the chance to get up close and personal with a range of trap types. The educator will deomonstrate a simple experiment and will give you your own Venus fly trap and crickets to feed it. You will also have the opportunity to attach a digital microscope to your smartphone and capture close up pictures of the traps in action. The session will end with you being given your own edible cricket to gobble up and try!
