Sydney MCA - Bella Room: Open Afternoons, 1pm - 4pm, Free, Age: All
Surround yourself with vibrant hues when we open the doors to the Bella Room, a little-seen space, over a number of Sunday afternoons from September to December.
Our 2018 Jackson Bella Room Commission, Paint me in (2018) by artist Lara Merrett, was designed for audiences with access needs. Paint me in features three brightly coloured, suspended canvases that visitors can touch, lie down in and explore. So often, paintings are untouchable and this intimate work takes away these boundaries.
About the Bella Room
The 2018–19 Jackson Bella Room Commission by Lara Merrett is informed by Merrett’s time observing participants of the Bella Program, who used the Bella Room as a “place to sit quietly, stretch out physically, mentally and also provide a completely different experience from the activities occurring at the same time outside the room and in the MCA as a whole”. As a space where people can have an especially intimate relationship with an artist’s work, Merrett has sought to “investigate ways to connect with painting as a refuge, sanctuary and nurturing place”, and to encourage interaction through touch and movement.
The Bella Program was established in 1993 through the generosity of MCA patrons, Dr Edward Jackson AM and Mrs Cynthia Jackson AM, and the Jackson family, in memory of their late daughter and sister Belinda.
